Lash and brow patch tests: what to know before booking

Why the right test matters, how much time to allow and why a clear result is not a guarantee against a reaction.

The useful bit

At Flirty, allow at least 48 hours between the relevant patch test and treatment, and confirm the test matches your service.

Book the test for the treatment you plan to have

A lash or brow patch test is a precaution for the products involved in a particular service. It is not a general certificate that every beauty treatment will suit you. Tint, lash-lift solutions, brow-lamination products and extension adhesives are different products.

At Flirty, allow at least 48 hours between your relevant patch test and treatment. Use the patch-test and package section, and tell the studio exactly what you want to book. If you are choosing Korean lifting or brow lamination, say so rather than assuming a test with a similar name covers every step.

What a patch test can and cannot tell you

A clear result does not guarantee that a full treatment will cause no reaction. London Lash notes that extension testing involves a smaller exposure than a full application and that reactions can develop even after previous treatments without a problem.

A salon screening test is also different from diagnostic patch testing arranged through a medical service. The NHS describes diagnostic testing as a way to investigate specific allergens. If you have an established allergy or a previous significant reaction, explain that before booking; a routine salon appointment should not be used to diagnose it.

Tell the studio about your history

Mention previous reactions to lash or brow products, hair dye or black henna, even if they happened elsewhere. The NHS notes that some hair dyes contain PPD, which can cause reactions, and that previous black-henna exposure can be relevant. The studio needs the details rather than a guess that a different brand will be fine.

If you know the product or ingredient involved, provide that information. Also mention current irritation around the eyes or brows and any recent treatment there. Do not apply lash adhesive or attempt a home test from online instructions; ask the studio how its testing appointment works.

Leave room in your diary

Book the test before committing to a treatment immediately ahead of a holiday or wedding. The studio needs time to review the result and may need more information before confirming suitability. A test should not be squeezed into the beginning of the full treatment appointment.

Ask how and when to report any change, including a reaction that appears after you have left. If a test appointment needs rearranging, check whether the treatment date also needs to move. Booking software availability does not replace the required interval.

What if something reacts?

Tell the studio and do not go ahead with treatment while the concern is unresolved. Seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional about symptoms rather than asking the salon to diagnose an allergy.

Call 999 for sudden swelling of the mouth, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or other signs of a serious allergic reaction. The NHS anaphylaxis guidance explains the emergency symptoms. For a very painful red eye, get urgent help from a GP, optician or NHS 111; a red eye with vision changes or a chemical injury requires emergency assessment.

Confirm the service before confirming the booking

Use the relevant extension, lash-lift or brow treatment page to explain your plans. Permanent brows have a separate consultation route, shown on the permanent-brow page.

If you are uncertain which test to choose, contact Flirty before booking. Giving the studio the treatment name, your previous treatment history and your preferred date is a useful starting point.
